Be warned - This is not your average diet article

Have you ever been on a diet?  Have you ever succeeded and then rewarded yourself with food for the weight lost?  Are you one of those people that eats because you're happy? then eats because you're sad? then eats because you think ... ah well, who cares anyway? Do you reach for that chocolate bar and just can't put it down until it's all gone? Yes?

Well, hello, I'm very pleased to meet you, let's shake hands .... welcome to the club!!!

I think I have tried just about every diet there ever has been and will probably go on trying every diet there ever will be BUT ... and here comes the big BUT .... sadly for me and you .... they will never work... yep .... you heard me ... none of them will ever work.

Since I have been studying holistic therapies I am realising more and more that for something to change in our life, whether it be our job status or wanting a new house or just plain old wanting to lose weight,  first we have to change our behavioural patterns.  We have to change mentally before we can begin to change physically.  Every change in our lives starts from the inside out.

Think about it ... if you really wanted an executive job and had to go for an interview, you would be thinking executive and you would, therefore, dress executive, wouldn't you?  You definately wouldn't go in jeans to the interview, so you see, your internal mentality has changed your external appearance to fit the role you want to take on.  

So, the answer to weight loss is simple .... we need to change our mentality.  Simple to say, a lot less simple to do, I know, believe me, I really do know.  Just like I, also, know that we are our own worst enemies when it comes to changing our mentality, especially with regards to weight loss.  We come up with all the excuses under the sun.  

"Ah well .... I'll start tomorrow because I need to finish what's in the fridge"
"Today's not a good day, I am feeling a little low and need the sugar"
"I already have enough problems in my life, I couldn't handle the pressure of a diet as well right now"

The list could go on forever.... I know ... I invented them!!!  The problem is that we keep going up in dress sizes and ignoring it until one day nothing fits, we refuse to look anymore in the mirror and, guess what?, we eat more as a result of feeling unhappy about the way we look to comfort ourselves.  It's like a vicious circle.  I guess if you're still reading you must agree with me so far.

Everyone is good at telling us we need to lose weight.  The media quite shamelessley throws at us that we're second class citizens if we are overweight and diet companies are making billions at our expense hoping that we will NEVER permanently lose weight.  In fact I am pretty sure that the Media, MacDonalds and the Diet companies are all owned by the same people!!!  I reckon their whole philosophy is based on: ....make them feel bad then they'll eat more but hey.... it's ok because we'll sell more diet products... 

It's amazing too, have you ever noticed how quickly new fangled diets appear and just as you're getting into it, BAM, the media give it bad press and, suddenly, it's no good for you because you could put your heart in danger, or your liver or kidneys or whatever could be at risk?  Now, let me ask you ... does that help you at all? Does it really give you the moral support you need, or do you just shrivel up into despair and .... oh yes .... reach for the food .... Yep .... I hear you loud and clear ... Me too!!!

Do you know what the worst thing is about people like you and me?  The one thing that is underrated and overlooked by our fellow critics? 

That  we actually, probably, know more about food, calorie intake, low fat products, dieting and best exercising techniques than any average naturally, lucky, slim person, like the girl in the picture!!!  If you're nodding your head right now, agreeing with me, you know just where I'm coming from.  We've read all the books, we've got the video workouts and the gym memberships, we've tried all the diets out there and chances are we've got a whole collection on eating right!!!

The truth of the matter is quite simply ... WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR MENTALITY!!!

For 1 ... The number one person in our life should be us!!!  I don't care if you have children or a husband, girlfriend, wife, whatever, the number one person has to be us.  If we are sick we can't take care of a sick child, even in an aircraft they tell you to fit your own mask first before you help anyone else.  Well, now I'm telling you that we have to love ourselves first before we can ever expect to love anyone else.  How do we love ourselves when we are horrified to look in the mirror?  Well, easy ... look at nature.  God created animals that are slim and got created whales, big fat huge whales, gorgeous whales that we love to look at, that have the same rights in God's eyes as the slim whales.  Get my point?

2 ... Nobody has the right to judge you except you ... and if you have faith in any God, you know that only he has the right to judge you when the time comes.  You... and I mean ... YOU the person.... are not the sum of your appearance ... you are the sum of your deeds ... if someone is so low life as to judge you by your appearance, stereotype you, or whatever, they are not a friend and definately not worth having around you and losing weight for somebody just isn't worth the somebody.  It's good if you can do it but what happens when that someone walks out on you? .... Get my point? ... Your efforts should be for you and you alone.

3 ... Surround yourself with positive, happy, people, the ones who love yuo no matter what, the ones who will support you no matter what and the ones that have been, are and always will be no matter what.  They are your true friends BUT .... you're number one friend at all times, you're best friend in the whole wide world .... should be YOU!!!  After all, some people know us a long time, some people know us a short time but the one thing they all have in common is that they think they know us but they don't.  Nobody ever really knows anybody.  We only let people know what we want them to.  We are the only ones who really know us and I am going to put my neck out here and say that some of us don't even really know ourselves that well.  That's why we need to be our best friend and we have to get to know the real US!!!!  Who we are, what we want, where we want to go and so forth and so on.

4. Nobody has the right to hurt you, not mentally nor physically.  Basic human respect, on an equal level, is what you should demand from the people that surround you.  You should not belittle anyone and they should not belittle you.  We are all the same in the eyes of whatever God you believe in.  We are all biologically made up of the same stuff, we all bleed, we all cry.  Don't settle for anything less than you are as a person and don't give anything less than you receive.

5... We need to eliminate as much stress from our daily life as possible.  It sounds like a hard task but it's not!!!  You know I was listening to one of these self-help conferences once and the speaker said something wonderful and so powerful that it was scary because it is so true ... he said: "What's the worst that could happen?" and he's right .... no matter how bad the day seems to be going, no matter how the job's looking, or how much the kids are playing up, just sit back and ask yourself.... "ok, well, what's the worst that could happen?".... 

So the boyfriend ditched you, the job offer fell through, the kids were late for school, you didn't get the job interview .... so what ..... who cares ... as long as you are still breathing and still on this planet, you can still fight for what you want ... so just sit down for a minute and ask yourself, in all honesty, "what's the worst that could happen?", until you find that there is nothing that is really worth all the stress, depression and anxiety we give it.    So try and keep a positive outlook.  Not all bad things happen for bad reasons and when one door closes another opens, as is suppose to be, in the ordained fashion of the universe.

Only when we can fulfill these criteria will we be able to begin to change our mentality.
